Well, naturally, as soon as I got home, I ran to my girlfriend's computer to install this plugin and test it. So far I did only one test. She has a fairly big Word document on which she's been working on the last weeks. The document has many of the most common features found in Word --tables, images, footers, headers, etc... So we tried saving it in ODF format. It wasn't as smooth as I expected, but it worked. Nevertheless, when we opened it in OpenOffice.org Writer, not all was as it should be --nothing fatal, I mean, some things were moved... Anyway, I think Sun is doing effort to correct all bugs and, with time, it will be, if not perfect, almost. |

So, I just took the time today to search for something that would bring me more compatibilty with Microsoft Office. The thing is that I really don't like to use Microsoft Office and, as a matter of fact, I don't use it since OpenOffice.org 1.1 (or so, perhaps even earlier). But my girlfriend happens to use Microsoft Office a lot. She writes all her essays and documents on M$ Office, and then asks me to review them or something --which I can't do correctly sometimes because of compatibility issues. Anyway, I just found what I was looking for. (yey! ) I don't know when did this come out, somehow I didn't read about it until today, but Sun has developed a plugin for Microsoft Office (2000, XP, 2003) which enables this office suite to read, edit, and save to the ODF format. And the best part, as always, is that the plugin is free. Thanks SUN! |
