ogg playback support for iPod
Written by Gurito

So...  The iPod is really chic and has a huge capacity. But I was really disappointed when I found out that it doesn't support ogg playback. So, if there's anybody out there who has the same problem, there is a solution. :D

Yesterday I had the firm idea that I would look for a solution. So, googling (how I hate that verb) I came to this page: rockbox. And found out that they have a way cooler firmware that the original from Apple. But I was a little sceptic, it being something new and firmware and I didn't even know how difficult was it going to be to install it...

Anyway, I kept on reading and came to the installation manual. It was not at all difficult --although the automatic installer didn't work for the iPod Video, but the manual installation did. So, I installed, rebooted, tested and voilá! Lo and behold, it plays ogg's. And it even supports theming!

So, if anybody wants some more functionality (practical functionality), test the Rockbox OS, it's opensource, free as in free beer, GPL'd, and very fun to use!

Mandriva 2008
Written by Gurito

I installed Mandriva 2008 in two machines, one has very normal specs: centrino, i810 video (1024x768), ipw2200 wireless.. And the other one is an AMD Turion x2, with an Nvidia GeForce Go 6100 (1280x800), and a highly problematic Broadcom 4318 wireless card.

I used the Mandriva One cd for the centrino notebook, it all went smoothly, all my hardware was fairly recognized and configured and in a few minutes I had a running Mandriva 2008. Some things came to my attention though. The processor was functioning at full speed the whole time, although the load was rather low, and even when running on battery power, the frequency didn't change. Cpufreqd was running (I prefer powernow), but the kernel module for the cpu frequency governor  was not loaded by default. Once I loaded the appropriate module (I was surprised to see that the centrino module didn't load) the cpu went back to normal. The other point was when I installed some KDE Applications. I like working on Gnome, but there are some apps for KDE which I simply like better. So I installed K3b and was surprised to see that it didn't run at all. Then I tried installing K9Copy (which isn't officially supported by Mandriva) and, though it ran, it kept complaining from not being able to communicate with the dcop_server. Apart from this, however, the distro was very pleasant, OpenOffice very fast and the looks are also not bad.

Fedora 8 Test 3
Written by Gurito

Well, I've been using Fedora 8 test 3 for the last two weeks as my principal OS in my laptop. So far, I can't say I'm impressed. However that's not bad, I mean that this release is filling all my expectations. It's pretty stable so far, my wireless (broadcom 4318) works pretty good --better than with Fedora Core 6 and Fedora 7, naturally--, my processor ticks almost never now and the new features (as the codec-buddy) run smoothly. I installed the livna devel repos in order to have my Nvidia working with proprietary drivers (I'm still hoping they'll someday open their code as AMD/ATI recently did) and started using compiz immediately. Now, the default configuration of Compiz isn't really impressive. But then again, I don't really like having so many effects on my screen, I'm usually happy with some transparency and perhaps other little features as sliding the desktop or such things. Nevertheless, I think they could provide us with some sort of configuration tool for compiz/compiz-fusion.
